Search for "web design Apex NC" and you'll find companies claiming to be local that are actually based in Seattle, Miami, or overseas. Here's how to spot the fakes and find a real local partner.
It's become a common SEO tactic: companies based thousands of miles away create landing pages for cities like Apex, Cary, and Raleigh to show up in local search results. They're not breaking any laws, but they're definitely misleading you.
They have pages for dozens of cities. If a company has separate landing pages for Apex, Cary, Raleigh, Charlotte, Tampa, Miami, and 50 other cities, they're not local to any of them. They're just gaming Google.
Their address doesn't check out. Plug their address into Google Maps Street View. Is it an actual office? A home? Or a random retail building where no web design company could possibly operate?
You can't reach a real person. Try calling them. Do you get a real human who knows Apex, or a call center, voicemail, or chatbot?
Their "local" content is generic. Does their Apex page actually mention anything specific about Apex? Or could the exact same copy work for any city in America?
There's a real difference between working with someone who lives in your community versus a company that just has a landing page with your city name on it.
When your web designer shops at the same Harris Teeter and their kids go to Apex schools, there's built-in accountability. We're not going to disappear on you, we're your neighbors.
We know that people in Apex search differently than people in Seattle. We understand Triangle customer behavior because we are Triangle customers.
Call or email us right now and you'll talk to Matt or Brooke. Not a call center in another time zone, not an AI bot, not a form submission. Or better yet, let's grab a coffee!
We moved to Apex before it was "the Peak of Good Living". We've watched this town grow and so we're 100% invested in making this community better...which means helping you beat the out of towners too!
Call them. Can you reach a real person during business hours? Do they sound like they know the area?
Check their address. Use Google Maps Street View. Does it look like a real home or office where someone actually works?
Look for city pages. Do they have landing pages for 20+ cities? That's a red flag they're not local to any of them.
Check their "About" page. Do they mention real local details? Or is it generic copy that could apply anywhere?
Ask for local references. Can they connect you with other Triangle businesses they've worked with?
Search their company name + real location. Sometimes a quick search reveals their actual headquarters is across the country.

Not exactly. It's a gray area. Having a landing page for a city you don't operate in isn't illegal, but it is misleading. Google has cracked down on fake Google Business listings, but landing pages on a company's own website are harder to police. The best defense is doing your research before hiring anyone.
Sure, remote work is real. But if they're pretending to be local when they're not, that's a trust issue from the start. And if local SEO is important to you, working with someone who actually understands your local market is a real advantage.
